Hello again humans. Sometimes there are anime with a unique concept. Sometimes those that concept is badly executed. And sometimes it comes as amusing despite being badly done. The anime in question is C³(or C cubed or Cube×Cursed×Curious).
Haruaki Yachi is a young high school student (too many of my reviews start like this) who one day receives a giant cube from his dad(who is overseas).
One night he discovers a young girl eating rice crackers. She turns out to be Fear Kubrick, the cube’s human form. Fear carries the curse of being a living weapon who’s been used to torture and kill many people. At the same time she and Harauki have to deal with enemies that want to either destroy her or exploit her weapon capabilities. All while being very cute.
That there lies the unique concept of the show. Fear(along with the other characters) deal with being cursed as either being a weapon or being attached to a weapon.
Fear herself deals with wanting to her curse lifted, but also has try to resist giving in to her blood thirst urges. This isn’t explored with much depth since most of the time it’s Fear saying she must not give in and then overcoming it (rinse, wash, repeat). This is done with very little variation. A pity since it could have resulted in a very emotional internal struggle.
The show tries to counter balance all the bloodshed good ole wacky fun and fan service. This of course makes the series really schizophrenic. Seriously, you have dark a setting where limbs are severed off, followed by a scene of light hearted and perverted humor in a Japanese high school.
C³ transforms into a comedy anime without giving a second thought. You could show clips from the different parts and swear they were two separate shows.
I will say that the comedy would have not been that bad if it weren’t for the fanservice drowning out most of it. Panty shots and boobies galore really get in the way of watching Fear trying to adjust to human life and all the funny mishaps she causes.
Despite all the negative things I’ve pointed out, it is actually is fun to watch. The switch from one tone to another is done almost instantaneously and can be funny. A serious conversation after much blood is spilled will of a sudden end with a joke.
Speaking of bloodshed, the fight scenes are actually great. Seeing all the weapons Fear and friends pull out to fight are pretty cool. That includes a guillotine type weapon.
The characters are likable enough to keep you interested. The bickering between Fear and the big breasted character Konoha over stupid little things gets some laughs now and then (especially how she calls her cow tits)
The one thing that will probably keep most from watching is that certain facts are just thrown at us with no explanation. For example, you all of a sudden you see that character’s know how to fight. The bad guys themselves are never fully explained as to who they are or why they want to hurt Fear.
So that is the series takes what could have been a unique concept and executes it in a very poor manner. But then comes full circle by still being interesting to watch. Not for everyone but it may entertain you if you give it a chance.
At least the opening theme is catchy.
