The story of Anne Shirley, Anne spelled with an “E”, is a story that has been told many times throughout the years, but Netflix’s new series “Anne with an E” has found the perfect balance between the book and previous adaptations while still creating something new and fresh.
Anne Shirley, is the story of an energetic orphan who goes to live at Green Gables on Prince Edward Island (Canada). Once she arrives at the farm it’s quickly revealed that a girl is not what The Cuthbert’s were expecting at all. It’s a boy they sent for and they have no use for a girl. Ultimately they find it hard to resist Anne’s liveliness and melodramatic personality. Moreover, she’s smart and funny (intentionally & unintentionally at times) but it’s her enthusiasm for life that makes her stand out.
The cinematography is stunning. The title sequence wonderfully sets the tone of the show and gives you a little glimpse into Anne’s imagination.
Whoever the set dresser is on this show must’ve had a lot of fun (or grief) because everything looks antique. So much was invested into authenticity of the times that everyone seems to fit in perfectly into it.
Amybeth McNulty brings a wonderful energy to the titular character. She truly captures all those little idiosyncrasies of Anne Shirley and delivers a heartfelt performance throughout the series.
If you find yourself leaning towards period dramas with strong and quirky female leads then this is definitely something to add to your Netflix queue.
But watch it though! Don’t just leave it there for months and tell yourself, “I should watch this…”
DO IT!
