Daemon Pyre are a death metal band based in Sydney. Beginning life under the name “As Silence Breaks” 9 years ago and releasing 2 successful albums as well as touring with local and international acts like At The Gates, Carnifex, Darkest Hour and Periphery among others. Since then the band went through numerous line up changes the band changed the name to Daemon Pyre and started a new.

Releasing their debut self titled album under the moniker the band have made a massive impact in the local death metal scene. Tracked and Produced by Shane Edwards (Northlane, Thy Art Is Murder, Arteries, Death Audio) and Mastered by Jens Bogren (At The Gates, Soilwork, Amon Amarth, Kreator, Opeth) the album is a pure slab of death metal brutality

From the opening intro track ‘The Nihilist Inside’ the album track by track is unrelentingly heavy. Sam Rilatt piercing bark rings out through all 11 tracks of the album while the technical guitar chops on display from Andrew Lilley and Simon Tattam are impressive but not over bearing. It’s great to hear technical prowess on display on a death metal album that isn’t a complete wankfest and over takes the entire album robbing it of any melody leaving it sounding like a cutlery draw being thrown down a flight of stairs.

While the album is heavy and extremely brutal in spots it’s not without melody and groove. There’s still blast beats and expert riffing and all the trappings you’d expect from a great death metal album but there’s still plenty of melody. Combined with the technical skill already mentions the band prove on each track that they can pretty much do anything. Also features guest vocals from Jason Peppiatt of Psycroptic on the track ‘Darkened Perceptions’ show the kind of camaraderie that makes the Australian metal scene so great

Considering this is the first full length release from this line up this is a huge effort and really sets the stage for what they can do. Also with it being their initial release there is still a huge potential of growth from these guys. The sky’s the limit and in the next few years I expect huge things from these guys.

This album is a must for all death metal fans who want more out of their death metal. It still have a the brutality you could want but there is still so much more they have to offer than just that. You need to hear it to at least judge it for yourself.
