Subversion are a UK based 5 piece melodic tech death band formed in 2008. Founded as the brain child of guitarist and clean vocalist Kai Giritli, Subversion have now released their 2nd full length studio album Animi.
Having made a massive dent touring internationally with the likes of Tesseract, Mnemic, Monuments and Xerath among others, Subversion have gained a cult following across the globe.
Building on the foundation of set out before them by previous “djent” and technical death acts Subversion takes the technical approach to metal and takes it all the way up to 11.
The opening track “Born Of The Sun” really sets the pace for the whole album. The tempo changes and almost mind melting. Its like the took their cues from Meshuggah and tried to see if it was possible to be even more unpredictable. The music is almost operatic in their changes. But among the changes their is breaks of pure melodic and clean vocals in place of the guttural death metal style vocals. Along with the keyboards and effects the band seem to be able to do pretty much anything.
The guitars and drumming on this album are second the none. The band really exemplify their skill through out the entire album, especially on tracks like “Imperfect” and “Entropy”. Kai Giritli and Sean Moxon’s guitar work through out the album is nothing short of mind blowing and Steve Cross’s drumming needs to be heard to be believed.
The only issue is the clean vocals come across extremely whinny and I cant get into it at all. Its almost like its from an early 2000s scenecore band and its a wall i cant get around. Its just irritating to me. Also some times the tempo changes are a little too erratic for my liking but apart from those minor issues the album is great.
If you’re a fan of Meshuggah, Periphery or Mnemic then you will definitely want to check these guys out.
Animi is available March 3rd
