Sex, Swerves, and Stunners: Summerslam (Part 2)

Summerslam main event

Summerslam (Part 2)

– The man who defines bitch-made, Kevin Kelly, is backstage and recaps Shane McMahon jumping Test on Sunday Night Heat with a Kendo Stick in an attempt to soften him up before their match tonight. After the recap, Kelly spots Test walking to the ring and tries to get a word from him but Test says that the time for talking is over.

Match #6

“Love Her or Leave Her”

Greenwich Street Fight

Test vs. Shane McMahon

– Hahaha, Test has his ribs taped up but he’s still wearing his fucking tank top so they had to tape around his clothing. Once again, I love pro-wrestling. It makes just enough sense to make no kind of sense.

#Kayfabe

#Kayfabe

– The stips for this match is that if Test loses, he has to stop banging Shane’s sister, Stephanie. If Test wins, he can put a ring on it.

– Test is fairly over, it seems. Or maybe it’s just this hot crowd.

– In the build to this match, Test murked all the members of the Mean Street Posse one by one so that it would just be him and Shane in a fair encounter by the time they got to Summerslam.

– No offense to Test but I think the crowd is just white hot for everything because Shane just got a good amount of cheers when his music hit. Shane O’ Mac is wearing a specialized version of his usual jersey where it has “I JUST PASSED THE TEST” on the back of it. I like it.

– Oddly enough, Shane shows no fear of Test as he gets right in the big man’s face. Before they can start fighting (or kiss), the Mean Street Posse hobbles out from backstage. They are ten different shades of fucked up as they are all bandaged up in various places. Someone might want to tell the dude in the back of the group how casts work because on one leg he has a cast on but is limping on the other leg. Don’t ask why I noticed that, I’m super OCD when it comes to wrestling.

– Excited about his besties showing up, Shane escorts his crew to some front row seats in the crowd so they can watch him act as his sister’s chastity belt. Cast Man isn’t even trying to sell his leg as he hops over the barricade. Why even bother with it then?

– Having seen enough foolishness, Test tackles Shane and starts doing a ground and pound as the ref calls for the match to start! Unfortunately, that decent start is immediately followed by some old dumb shit as Shane, after getting thrown back into the ring, tackles Test and begins pounding on him. OK, I get that Test has hurt ribs but he is 6 foot 6, 270 pounds, and used to be a bodyguard for Motley Crue. In what world could privileged, spoiled brat Shane McMahon, who is not a wrestler or even all that muscular, take him down to the mat with ease? Very unbelievable. Never mind that Shane comes off like a massive babyface for taking down a guy that’s much bigger than him so easily and showing no fear whatsoever.

– Thankfully, Test uses his size to regain control of the match after like a second of Shane beating on him. The match spills out to ringside as some turd in the crowd is advertising an AOL email account on a sign. Taking it back to 99’, motherfuckers.

– It might not be a WWF title match but it’s time for some crowd brawling as Test throws Shane over the barricade. Taking advantage of his opponent’s injured ribs, Shane starts fighting back and ends up sending Test over the barricade. He tries to jump off the barricade and do a Crossbody on Test but the big man catches him and hits a Powerslam on the floor.

– As they brawl around ringside, Test gets uppity with the Mean Street Posse as he gets near them. One of them spits Champagne in his face prompting Stephanie’s boy toy (not HBK) to toss Shane into his own homies!

– Steph is shown backstage watching the match on one of those tiny ass monitors (girl, get your daddy to buy a bigger tv) and is pleased with her man’s performance.

– Back to the match, Test lays out all of the Mean Street Posse with cookie sheet shots to the head. The big man goes after Shane but gets mugged by a recovered Posse. LMAO, the MSP are no-selling the shit out of their injuries and are moving around perfectly fine as they triple-team Test and beat him up. Man, these guys are trash.

– Shane gets handed a “Mean Street Posse” mailbox, complete with a dollar sign, and whacks Test in the head with it. After working over Test’s back and ribs with a street sign, Shane grabs a portrait of the Poose. He briefly admires it before smashing it over Test’s head, sending glass flying everywhere! Test rightfully sells the shot like complete death.

Shane O Mac Test

– Shane throws Test back in the ring and tries to cover him but Test somehow kicks out. The babyface tries to make a comeback when he gets back to his feet but Shane cuts him off with a flying elbow. I hate to sound like a dirt sheet writer but Test runs the ropes really weird.

– BRAH. Shane just went for a goddamn Corkscrew Moonsault. I mean, it backfired because Test moved out of the way but what a spectacular move. Shane is every bit as crazy as his dad.

– Both men sell on the mat for a bit before they get back up to their feet. While Test is running the ropes, Shane goes for a leap-frog, which he had done earlier, but Test is ready for him this time as he catches him with a Powerbomb. He covers Shane but one of those dastardly Mean Street Posse members is distracting the ref. By the time the ref turns around to count the pin, Shane has enough strength to kick out.

– Test goes for his Running Big Boot but Shane ducks under it and the ref ends up getting killed by it. Test briefly tries to revive the ref before going “whatever” and sending Shane to the outside. He beats on Shane with the stop sign that Baby McMahon used earlier before tossing him back in the ring. Before Test can re-enter the ring, he’s attacked by all three members of the Mean Street Posse. “Come on, I thought they were all hurt!?”- J.R. THEY’VE BEEN MOVING FINE THE ENTIRE TIME THEY’VE BEEN OUT HERE, JR. What an idiot.

– The Posse drag Test onto the Spanish Announce Table, giving Shane the opportunity needed to do an elbow drop from the top rope onto Test through the table! Just think about this for a second. Shane McMahon had more money than me or pretty much anyone reading this will ever see in our lifetime. He should be living out his days in luxury but he’s willing to do insane spots like that. That’s what you call respect for DIS BUSINESS. Shane is that dude.

– Backstage, Steph looks concerned. Aww, poor girl. I just want to hug her and comfort her and maybe sniff her hair a little. …Wait, what?

– Both men lay dead in the wreckage of the broken table for a long time as the ref threatens to count both men out if neither one can make it to their feet before his count hits ten. What happens if this match ends in a draw, BTW? Can Test still hook up with Steph and have babies with her as long as he doesn’t marry her? Whatever, it don’t matter because the Posse distracts the ref before tossing Test and Shane back in the ring. Shane manages to drape an arm over Test but Steph’s P-game is just too good to give up as Test finds a way to kick out.

– Not the first time I’ve said this about this show but the crowd is super hot for this match. They popped big when Test kicked out of the Elbow Drop of Doom.

– A member of the Posse distracts the ref (for literally no reason since this is a street fight and no one can be DQ’ed) as another member of the Posse tries to take Test out with a street sign. The former Motley Crue bodyguard ducks under the shot, however, and causes Shane to take the shot to the face. Test hits an awful looking Big Boot on the Posse member that screwed up and falls on top of Shane. It should have been a three count but one of Shane’s homies save him by yanking on his leg.

– Rodney (at least, I think this one is named Rodney) nails Test with his cast and drags Shane on top of him. Not the finish. Can’t say that I blame Test for fighting so hard. It’s like my goal in life to marry a pretty, rich white girl that can take care of me financially.

– Oh snap, here comes the Stooges to brawl with the Posse! Patterson and Brisco show these young kids how to fucking work by laying them out on the outside. Back in the ring, Joey Abs tries to hit Test with a chair but it ends up getting sent right into his face via a Test BIg Boot. Shane tries to tackle Test but the big man moves out of the way, causing the Boy Wonder go running shoulder-first into the ring post. After hitting Shane with a Pumphandle Slam, Test comes off the top rope with an Elbow Drop for the win! MOVIN’ ON UP, TO THE EAST SIDE.

– Great match, way better than I was expecting going in. It was similar to X-Pac/Shane at WM XV where even though it wasn’t the most technically sound match, it told such a great story I can’t help but love it. This is a good example of overbooking that was actually very effective.

– After the match, Steph comes out to celebrate with her bae. They presumably make plans to pick up Karma Sutra for their celebration party after the show before heading to the back with the Stooges. This show pretty great so far. Right now, it’s the best show I’ve reviewed in this series.

– Time for the tag title match between X-Pac & Kane and Undertaker & Big Show. Before the match, we get a hype video recapping how Taker and Show came together. Basically, “we are both giants and kill bitches dead” is the reasoning.

– LMAO. At some point, Kane spoke for the very first time, I think, and it sounds like Stephen Hawking on Quaaludes. Oh yeah and Kane-Pac won the titles from the Acolytes on Raw. Kane said “Suck it.” LOL’d I did.

– Based off the hype video, this feud seems like it’s been built up pretty well.

– Micheal “Black As” Cole is backstage in the interview pit with the tag champs. X-Pac cuts a short but sweet promo about how there is no amount of ass-whooping that he can’t take and how him and Kane are closer than Taker and Kane ever were.

Match #7

Tag Team Championship

The Undertaker & Big Show (w/Paul Bearer) vs. Kane & X-Pac(c)

– They do a cool thing with the champs’ entrance where Kane’s intro transitions into the DX theme.

– (Talking about X-Pac) “He’s more nervous than a pizza on it’s way to Paul Bearer!” – The King.

– Both teams start swinging as soon as they get in the ring and the bell rings. After a few seconds of action, the pace slows down as Taker and Show double team Kane in their corner.

– Kane makes his own comeback and sends Show to the outside. Meanwhile, X-Pac rejoins the action as he hits a Crossbody on Taker. Unfortunately, Taker throws Pac off him before three.

– I guess Pac is the legal man for his team as Taker starts beating on him in the ring. They dick around for a bit before Pac tags in Kane. Kane forces his brother into his corner and rocks him with some punches. The ref pulls him off which gives Pac the opportunity to cheap-shot Taker behind the ref’s back. What a great babyface.

– Somehow, Taker and Pac end up brawling on the outside. Taker tries to hit Pac with a Chokeslam but Kane saves his partner by pulling him into the ring. The Big Red Machine lays out Show on the outside before hitting “The Kane Clothesline” on Taker for a nearfall. Kane shoots Taker off the ropes for a Back Body Drop but Taker isn’t an idiot and counters the move with a DDT.

– Show gets tagged in and immediately puts Kane on the backfoot. The heels get the heat on Kane for a while before a Double Clothesline causes both Kane and Taker to go down. Kane makes the hot tag to his partner, who briefly runs wild on Taker before getting cut off.

– After Show cheap-shots Pac on the outside, Kane starts brawling with Show. Meanwhile, Taker nuts Pac on the ringpost on the outside. Pac’s testicular troubles continue as Show does a Headbutt to his groin behind the ref’s back in the ring.

–  The two big bully heels get the heat on lil’ X-Pac, just manhandling him like he was a small child. It seems like the end is near when Show hoists Pac up for a Chokeslam but Kane comes in illegally and smacks him in the face. This causes Show to drop Pac, allowing the degenerate to hit a low blow! Ref Earl Hebner clearly sees it but does nothing.

– It looks like Pac is gonna make the hot tag but Taker gets tagged in first and pulls him back by the hair to stop him from making the tag. Figuring that if it worked once, it will work again, Pac mule kicks Taker in the dick right in front of the ref. I guess Hebner just hates Taker because he just kinda goes “oh shucks” to the blatant cheating.

– After getting the second hot tag of the match, Kane runs wild with more fire than a Kendrick Lamar verse. The match quickly breaks down as Pac gets caught while going for a Plancha to the outside on Taker. Taker tries to treat Pac like a lawn dart and toss him into the ring post but the degenerate slips out the back and sends Taker into the post.

– Pac hits the Bronco Buster on Show. I guess Show is used to having another man’s balls on his chin as he totally no-sells the move and hits a Chokeslam on Pac. The giant arrogantly does a “foot-on-chest” pin but Pac kicks out! Nice to see that Show’s “World’s Dumbest Man” gimmick is alive and well. Taker is furious at Show for being such a moron and not doing a proper pin that he force tags himself in. That Chokeslam may have taken too much out of Pac as Taker has no problem hitting the Tombstone and pinning him for the win as Show stops Kane from breaking up the pin. Well, that finish came out of nowhere.

– Despite his team’s victory, Taker is still mad at Show for being an idiot and is openly yelling at his partner. I have not looked at the card for next month’s show but I would bet money this team won’t be together on it.

– Backstage, Jesse Ventura is giving the same speech to Stone Cold that he gave to the other two participants in the main event. Austin is like “sorry, I left all my fucks at home” and walks off before Ventura is even finished talking.

Match #8

Kiss My Ass Match

The Rock vs. Billy Gunn

– Let it be known that Billy Gunn wrestled in the semi-main at Summerslam against the fucking Rock. Crazy to think about in 2014.

– Billy Gunn comes out with a person hidden under a tarp. Once in the ring, he reveals that it’s a fat chick and that the Rock is gonna have to kiss her ass when he loses. “The Rock is gonna smell-el-el-el what her ass  is cooking!”- Billy Gunn

– Loud “Rocky” chants fill the arena before Rock even comes out and the place goes nuts when he actually makes his entrance. He’s more over than the Young Bucks.

– Gunn jumps Rock before the bell rings to start the match. The crowd rallies behind their hero as Gunn lays into him with punches. Rocky soon starts returning fire and sends Gunn to the outside.

– They brawl up the ramp as Rock continues to lay the Smackdown on Gunn’s candy ass.

– “She has the ample, designated ass suitable for kissing.”- JR.

– Ref isn’t even trying to count either man out as Rock actually throws Gunn against the side of the Lion’s Den. The fight goes back to ringside as Rock takes a hard Irish-Whip into the ring steps.

– As they brawl near the announce tables, Rock mocks the hell out of Gunn by placing King’s crown on his head before laying him out with a punch. Just to be a douche, Rock spits water on Gunn before saying “fuck you” to the fat chick. Gunn isn’t into fat-shaming so he blasts Rock with the ring bell. Right in front of the ref but of course, no DQ. THAT’S THAT SHIT THAT I DON’T LIKE.

– Inside the ring, Gunn gets the heat on Rock with some dull offense. Rock teases a comeback here and there but gets cut off by Mr. Ass every time.

– You know, the stipulation of this match just hit me. What in god’s name am I watching?

– Anyhoo, Rock hits a DDT and both men are down. After a few seconds, Rocky throws an arm over Gunn but Gunn kicks out.

– Rock starts hitting all of his signature moves for nearfalls. This is the most basic, meat-and-potatoes match Rock has had on PPV this year so far. Gunn hits the Fame-Asser outta nowhere but, instead of going for the win, asks the fat chick to get in the ring. The chick lifts up her dress and sticks her ass out so Gunn can try to force Rock to kiss it. Rocky goes “hell nah” and turns the tables on Gunn, forcing him face-first into the never-ending abyss of cellulite and fat. As soon as I call this match basic, a guy gets a face-full of ass, haha.

Pictured here: Billy Gunn's main event push being executed

Pictured here: Billy Gunn’s main event push being executed

– One Rock Bottom and a People’s Elbow later, this match is over. Honestly, that whole thing felt like a massive waste of the Rock. He’s been the MVP of PPV this year and he gets thrown in a nothing match on the second biggest show of the year against BILLY GUNN. I actually like Billy Gunn but no one in the building seriously believed Rock was losing to that goober. The match was inoffensive (well, that chick’s ass was pretty gross) but that was a low point on a really good show.

– It’s main event time! We get a video recap showing how HHH actually lost a triple-threat match between himself, Chyna, and the Undertaker to decide the #1 contender to the WWF title after Austin ran in, knocked him out with a chair shot, and threw Chyna on top of him. Yes, the original main event of Summerslam 99 was Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. CHYNA. This lead to another #1 contender’s match between Chyna and HHH where Chyna won again, this time after interference from Mankind. For no reason other than he politely asked to be, Mankind was then given a match against Chyna for the #1 contendership. He won after a distraction by HHH. After all of that convoluted bullshit, a match was made between HHH and Mankind by Shane McMahon to decide the UNDISPUTED~! challenger to Austin’s title. Of course, the match ended in a double pin. lol. Linda McMahon finally went “fuck it” and made the SS main event a triple-threat match. You got all that? Good because it took me a while to write that crap down.

Match #9

WWF Championship

Triple Threat Match

Special Ref: Jesse Ventura

Mankind vs. HHH (w/Chyna) vs. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin(c)

– Before the match, “The Body” cuts a promo where he says that all the people who think that’s he’s a disgrace for showing up at the show could suck it and that he was proud to be a wrestler! He sounded really sincere when he said that.

– Much like last month, they sell the importance of the match by showing each man’s entrance as they walk from the back to the ring. Great little touch that they should do nowadays.

– HHH gets uppity with Jesse before Austin makes his entrance. Of course, he gets a big pop. The champ starts trading blows with HHH as soon as he gets in the ring and this one is underway!

– Mankind drags HHH to the outside and double teams him with Austin. The babyfaces continue to work over HHH inside the ring before Mankind hugs Austin and offers him a handshake. It turns out Austin don’t need Mankind’s pussy, he’s on his own dick as he starts laying into Foley.

– Austin goes for the Stunner on Foley but Mankind pushes him off and sends him crashing into HHH, sending the Game to the outside. Foley tries to go for a Cactus Clothesline on Austin but the champ ducks under, causing Mankind to go sailing over the top rope.

– All three men dick around on the outside and brawl with each other, hitting whoever is closest to them. Eventually, Austin and HHH brawl with each other while Chyna gets uppity with Ventura and the teacher’s pet, Mankind. After some give and take brawling, HHH whacks Austin in the knee with a chair.

– Inside the ring, HHH works over Mankind, stomping away at him while he’s in the corner. Foley actually slaps on the Mandible Claw but Chyna saves her man by nutting her on the ring post. “The Body” caught her in the act, however, and tells her to head to the back. HHH tries to protest the decision but Austin knocks him down.

– It’s a WWF title match in 99’ so of fucking course, Austin and HHH have to brawl near the set on the stage. They soon make their way back into the ring where the Cerebral Assassin works over Austin’s bad knee. Pissed at Austin rejecting his offer of love earlier, Mankind actually assists HHH in stomping a mudhole in Austin. They double-team the champ for a bit before Mankind goes for a cover and HHH breaks it up.

– Someone says a naughty word that gets bleeped as Mankind and HHH battle each other. Mankind misses a Cannonball off apron that I’m sure didn’t feel too great for Foley.

– It’s a 99 PPV WWF title match so guess what this match needs? CROWD BRAWLING~! Austin and HHH hop over the barricade into the WWF Universe before Mankind follows suit. They all brawl in the crowd and  around ringside before they all end up in the ring. Austin gets in a low blow on HHH because he’s Austin and he can get away with that because he’s freaking Austin.

-, Austin Slingshots HHH into Mankind. HHH rolls out of the ring while Mankind drunkenly stumbles into a STUNNER! STUNNER! STONE COLD! STONE COLD! Austin goes for the cover but HHH nails him in the back with a chair to break it up. Ventura is pissed at HHH for being such a heel but The Game don’t care as he hits an unprotected chair shot to Foley’s head. At least that one was soft compared to other ones from this era.

– HHH tries to pin Mankind but Ventura straight up refuses to count the pin. HHH literally says “bullshit!” and squares up like he’s ready to fight The Body. Shane runs out to defuse the situation and tell Ventura that he has no right to not count the pin. The crowd loudly chants “Asshole”.

Ventura Summerslam

– Austin must have smelled that there was a McMahon in the ring as he hits a Stunner on Shane for no reason other than he can. Ventura decides to get physical with Shane and tosses him out of the ring, screaming “that one was for your old man, ya little bastard!” Awesome.

– While that was going on, Austin managed to trap himself in the ring ropes and is unable to free himself, forcing HHH to get him untangled before beating his ass. A double Clothesline leaves both HHH and Austin down. Mankind, on the other hand, is on his feet and signaling for the Mandible Claw! He puts Mr. Socco on his hand and slaps on the Claw on both Austin AND HHH. Austin quickly low blows Foley to get out of it. HHH tries to hit the Pedigree on Foley but the champ breaks it up with a Clothesline, leaving all three men down.

– Everybody slowly staggers to their feet as Austin cause HHH and Mankind to knock heads. KICK! WHAM! STUNNER ON HHH! Austin hooks the leg but Mankind breaks up the pin.

– HHH hits the Pedigree on Austin but Foley shoves The Game out of the ring before he can pin him. Mankind hits the Double Arm DDT and…PINS AUSTIN!? Yes, Mankind is the new WWF Champion! The crowd was so not expecting that to be the finish. They were sitting on their hands when Foley hit the DDT and there was this brief feeling of “lolwut” after the three count was made. Once realization set in, however, the crowd cheered.

– Anticlimactic finish aside, the match was a perfectly acceptable PPV main event. Nothing to write home about but it was enjoyable.

– After Foley and Jesse head to the back, a furious HHH starts destroying Austin’s bad knee with a chair in the ring. Refs try to break it up but Chyna keeps them at bay. Although Mankind is the new champion, the show ends with HHH  and Chyna standing tall as officials check on the wounded Rattlesnake. Could HHH be any more of a heel? My lord.

This was the best show I’ve seen in this review series so far and it isn’t even close. The only “meh” matches on the show were Tori/Ivory and Rock/Gunn. I found every other match to be enjoyable. Test/Shane, in particular, was great. The crowd was into pretty much every match which helped the show a lot. Check this one out if you’ve never seen it. Really good show that gives you a feel for what this era was all about and why people remember it so fondly.
