After proving why some times crowd funding can be the best option Obituary have produced one of their best albums in years.
After launching a kickstarter campaign to be able to record their 9th studio album on their own terms the way they want to the band managed to hit their goal easily and then sum thanks to their rabid fan base.
The result is a pure slab of plodding brutal old school sweaty heavy Florida death metal the way its meant to be.
The band hit the studio with a game plan to return to their roots and record a classic old school Obituary album in the vein of the of their first 3 releases “Slowly We Rot”, “Cause of Death” and “The End Complete”.
This album is very raw and it almost give of a vibe of a demo as opposed to being recorded in a professional studio. John Tardy’s voice is incredibly raw on this album compared to their last few studio albums. The drumming from Donald Tardy is fantastic. There’s no editing in post and no triggering used in the recording of his drumming, what you are hearing on the album is his drumming as he played it in the studio. The same with everyone else’s playing. The album is recorded straight up there in the studio the way the would have done it back in the day and it definitely gives the album that classic death metal vibe all the way though.
Tracks like “Centuries of Lies”, “Back on Top”, “Out of Blood” and the title track “Inked In Blood” are pure Obituary at their finest. This album is exactly what the fan base have been clamoring for since the band got back together in 2003.
This whole album is one massive calculated move from the band to demonstrate the world that they are still on top of their game, still one of the true pioneers of death metal and one of the main icons of the Florida scene.
This album can be held up along side the bests of the genre and it total holds its own. Its brutally heavy from start to finish and its raw and punishing to listen to which is exactly what you want from death metal.
All death metal fans both old school and new are going to want to pick this album up. Its a true highlight of the bands career and proves that they will be around for a long time to come. There’s still plenty of life left in Obituary
