Thomas Gabriel Fischer (AKA Tom Warrior), Extreme Metal Pioneer/God is back. The man who defined a genre and influenced bands the likes of Obituary, Sepultura, Anthrax, Darkthrone & Mayhem with his bands Hellhammer and Celtic Frost and then went on to man things darker and more experimental with his new group Triptykon has now released the bands second album “Melana Chasmata”
“Melana Chasmata”, which is Greek for “black, deep depressions”, is further continuation of the heavy doomy sound as combined with the experimental and avant-garde elements that Fischer started with Celtic Frost. The album does sound like a great cross between the Celtic Frost albums “To Mega Therion” and “Into The Pandemonium” with some electronic elements and the use of female vocals on some tracks.
The album opens with the huge doom-laden “Tree of Suffocating Souls” which completely sets the tone for the whole album. Its a big slow plodding heavy riffing track that’s the kind of song that has made Fischer the icon he is today.
Every track on this album is great its impossible to pick any particular track as the stand outs. Some platinum selling metal bands could release an entire careers worth of music and not have one track on any album that even comes near how mind blowing every single song on this album is. They are all long sprawling masterpieces with average length being around 7 minutes and one track “Black Snow” reaching over 12 minutes but at no points do they seem boring or repetitive.
The entire album including the cover art by the late H.R. Giger is truly a piece of art. This is quite possibly the only perfect album I’ve heard in years and unless something face meltingly amazing comes out in the next 6 months this will be easily the album of the year
All metal fans must own this
