Formed in 1987 Autopsy after drummer Chris Reifert departed Death, along side Death and Possessed, Autopsy are considered one of the original pioneers of the death metal genre and their 1989 debut album “Severed Survival” is considered an all time classic.
Continuing to release 3 more studio albums into the 90s and shifting into more of a Doom/Death metal sound the band ultimately broke up and drummer/vocalist Reifert went on to form a Hardcore band Abscess.
Then reforming in 2009 and putting out 2 more albums to much critical success. Now releasing their 7th studio album “Tourniquets, Hacksaws & Graves” Autopsy are out to prove that they still are they best at what they do and that’s making straight up full on old school death metal.
The album opens with track “Savagery” and it just continues from there. The drumming is brutal, the vocals are as harsh as ever and the guitar and bass just has that classic death metal sound that you would expect from an album released in 1987 but with much better production. The second track “King of Ripped Flesh” features the exact kind of lyrics you’d expect from these guys, Smash my fingers, gouge out an eye /To death I fucking defy. Also I features a very doomy break down section and chorus.
Other stand out tracks include the doom-laden title track “Tourniquets, Hacksaws & Graves”, The thrashy “After The Cutting” and the plodding extra heavy “Deep Crimson Dreaming”.
While this album is a bit of a through back to the death metal of old its still manages to seem new and prove there is still a breath of creativity in the band and unlike many other reformed bands of that era they are not touring only as a nostalgia act trading on past glories with nothing new to offer
This album is a must for all fans of classic death metal and also I’d recommend all kids that are fans of deathcore pick this up now because this is how death is supposed to sound
