With it being Halloween and my distinguished co-writers reviewing various horror movies, I had considered throwing my own review of a film up; Theatre of the Deranged is an anthology film with my girl Sophie Dee starring in a segment called ‘Cannibal Blood Girl’. Other reviews have ranged from it being lame and shlocky B material to it being awesome and shlocky B material. It seemed like a great thing to talk about, but then I remembered something else. Something from a long time ago, and something no one but the most devoted long-term Sophie fans would really know about.
‘The Bitch Just Won’t Die’ was an update from mid 2008 on www.clubsophiedee.com. Its original name was ‘The Nerds Revenge’ or a title of that ilk, and I was interested, being a nerd, since our other revenges were pretty good (well the first one anyway). What was downloaded that day was nothing like I expected.
It opens with a young woman talking to a young man, telling him that his appointment is going to be late. Her boss is out at lunch. He rises, because it wan’t him he wanted to see. I’d post more screencaps than the following, but it’s basically 12 minutes of this:
There’s no sex or anything resembling what I consider porn, and barely any nudity; it’s simply an extended assault scene that leads to a murder. It’s shockingly brutal, and the majority of the videos run-time is dedicated to constricting the life out of Sophie’s character. There’s no music and the camera blurs in and out, somehow making the whole thing even more uncomfortable.
I remember watching it the first time, just sitting there and asking myself what the hell was going on. Even today, four years later on a second viewing, I can’t bring myself to enjoy it for what it is. But being a little older and wiser, I fully understand why the choice to make this piece was made. This was the first time Sophie had gotten to publicly express her interest in more morbid subjects, and as time has gone on she’s gotten to show off that side more and more, though not to the degree of this first video (in her adult work, I should clarify). Some of those pictorials are actually among my favourites (and I’ve thrown some pics in below), just because of the change of style and content. “The Bitch Just Won’t Die’ is just too much too soon, and stands as a hidden oddity among her work. It was a pretty controversial release at the time, and reactions to it resulted in first the name change and then it having it’s links removed from the videos section. You could still find it with a direct link if you knew what it was, but as far as I know I’m one of the few people who knows how to find it or that it even existed. Looking back I’m sorry that an audience wasn’t there for it at the time. It was a creative risk, and taking those deserves some credit, even if it’s not something I like. But it’s Halloween, and I think if there’s anytime to tip our hat to a legitimately unsettling and creepy scene like this one, than today’s the day.
