Ayyy everybody!
After an extended hiatus from the FAN (graduated from school, been looking for a job, etc.), I’m back to bring you more previews of upcoming album releases you may – or may not – know of.
Ellie Goulding – Halcyon
The singer of the hit ‘Lights’ announced last year she wasn’t one of those artists who’ll fade away into obscurity after they make one popular song. Originally, Halcyon was supposed to come out in 2011, but due to unforeseen circumstances, isn’t being released until this week. Back in July, Goulding released a free download of the song ‘Hanging On,’ which is a cover of a song by Active Child, which isn’t even a year old yet. Her version features Tinie Tempah, and could be heard at her SoundCloud page here. The first official single, ‘Anything Can Happen,’ was heard in a Beats by Dre commercial. The video for the song features Goulding and her boyfriend (played by an actor…in real life, she’s currently dating Skrillex…yeah) being involved in a car crash, which Ellie herself experienced in her past. Reports came out after the video was released that she did her own stunts and refused using a stuntwoman, which is pretty damn impressive if you see what she’s done in the video.
Freelance Whales – Diluvia
Another album title with a name that I’m pretty sure was made up. Journeymen is probably a very accurate word to describe Freelance Whales. Having toured for a good portion of two years in support of their first album, Weathervanes, this band pretty much used that method into recording Diluvia. They traveled all along the East Coast in New York and New Jersey through different recording studios to make the new album, which can be quite adventurous, I’m sure. The first single, ‘Locked Out,’ which is available for free on their website, is indie pop at its finest, in my opinion. You can’t get much better than that. If you want to catch them live, they’ll be performing at this weekend’s Austin City Limits which you’ll be able to catch on YouTube, as well as many other tour dates throughout the country.
Coheed & Cambria – The Afterman: AscensionMuch in the vein of Green Day with their trio of album releases in the next coming months, Coheed & Cambria are putting out a duo of albums, with the second one (The Afterman: Descension) coming out next year. The 8 minute music video for the first single “Domino the Destitute” sure is something. If you’re a fan of boxing, money, men on fire, blood, and car bombs, then this is the video for you. It can easily be considered a rock epic, telling a magnificent story, which is what Coheed & Cambria are known for. If you like them, or the video, I’d recommend checking the albums out.
Trash Talk – 119Can never go wrong with a little punk. Trash Talk is notable for their newest album being released through Odd Future Records, home of Tyler, the Creator and the other members of Odd Future. Trash Talk is the first band not to be a member of Odd Future to put a record out through their label. Lots of screaming, this one. The extremely short song ‘F.E.B.N.’ has a video which features a lot more random things than the Coheed & Cambria video I mentioned above. Definitely something to be seen.
Tame Impala – LonerismOk…Tame Impala rules. ‘Elephant’ is a garage-y psychedelic tune that kicks all kinds of ass. ‘Feels Like We Only Go Backwards’ is a bit slower, but equally awesome. Tame Impala is definitely a band to look out for.
That’s it for this week. Maybe I’ll come back next week. Maybe not. I really don’t know.
Tonight, I’m gonna see one Mr. Jack White perform live at the Lifestyles Communities Pavillion in Columbus, Ohio, and I’m gonna brag about it next time I post. (It’ll probably be next week)
