Full disclosure; I’m not a big Family Guy fan. I enjoyed its first run, but since it’s returned I’ve never watched it on any regular basis. Occasionally I’ll get in the mood and watch a chunk over a weekend, but I’m by no means a devotee. However, I like it enough to really get a lot of laughs out of this dvd. Family Guy was never high-brow humour, and Peter’s house getting over-run with hedgehogs (Ron Jeremy’s handle before all of us jags got the internet and got one) could work in the actual cartoon. Both times I watched this I laughed at Ron, in a toilet, proudly proclaiming “You know, I used to be able to suck me own dick!” It’s not classy, but it works! Family Guy XXX’s biggest strength is that it perfectly captures what makes Family Guy successful when it’s on its game. The jokes are non-stop, so the ones that don’t work are excusable, and the cut-aways are quick and know when to not drag themselves out. For example, Charlie Sheen’s replacement…on 2 and a Half X-Men.
There really is more good jokes in this movie then I’d have thought possible, and I watched the abridged ‘clean’ version. All the sex is cut out, leaving it to clock in at just about 14 minutes. But its a SOLID 14 minutes of jokes. I’d recommend this to people who just enjoy the show, I honestly would.
Now just by looking at the cast, you could tell this was going to be a winner. Because this starred Anthony Rosano. If you read any of my reviews, and he’s got a part in the movie, you’ll typically find me saying he’s the highlight. The guys straight-up funny, and he has plenty of opportunities to mug it up here.
Nobody else really gets as much to do, but Tyler Knight, James Deen, and Dick Delaware all do very commendable jobs with the time they get. Really good casting on the men all the way around, and they each came off as a decent take on their role. Knight’s slow delivery is paced just right, and Delaware has a great moment of pity where he channels Patrick Warburton. He never gets a chance to really get into those Joe-rage moments, which is a shame. James Deen, always reliable, is one again a solid performer here. His Quagmire doesn’t sound as good as the voices of the other two, but he has the energy and spirit. Any scene he’s in has that frantic head twitch, and I don’t think I’ll ever see it look so good in real life again.
The ladies I’m a bit more torn on. Misty Stone is hot, but she’s not at all someone who resembles Loretta. Someone on the forum made a joke that she was the only black girl people seemed to want to hire for these parodies. And Sarah Shevon I really liked in Spider-Man XXX, and she’s still gorgeous, but I don’t care for her Meg. It’s lacking a level of desperation and isolation. I guess if Meg really grew up looking like that she’d be a bit more secure though. The costumes great, but Sarah’s just too hot and out-of-character. I do very much like Jennifer White as Bonnie. Her voice is a nice match, and I could pass her off as a baby-less Bonnie, if not a bit too young. But i’ll take it! Rounding out the ladies with the biggest part is Aurora Snow, who I am having a hard-time processing as not being a teen still. I guess that’s what happens when you watch a girl for over ten years. I keep thinking of her from back then. but she;s 30 now, and still very giggity. Aurora still doesn’t have a lot to do, but she does a damn fine pornstar version of Alex Borstein.
tl, dr: If you’re a fan of the show, give this watch. It’ll get you laughing out loud. If you’re not a fan, well, the girls are still hot.
