Today we will be taking a look back at Friday Night Smackdown when Christian hit Randy Orton in the head with the World Heavyweight Championship a few weeks ago.
This whole thing began seventeen years ago when Christian broke into the business of professional wrestling. Seventeen years later Christian received one of the few World Heavyweight Championship matches he has received while in the WWE at Extreme Rules where he fought Alberto Del Rio in a ladder match. While it is unfortunate that Christian only received the title match because Edge was forced to retire as the World Heavyweight Champion due to injury, he made the best of the opportunity and fulfilled his lifelong dream of become the World Heavyweight Champion.
Five days later on the May 6 edition of Friday Night Smackdown Christian wanted to celebrate his big win with the fans, however Smackdown General Manager put a halt to that when he ordered Christian to defend his newly won championship against who the fans cheered the loudest for. The crowd decided that Randy Orton would be getting a title match on that fateful day.
Later in the show before the match took place Todd Grisham asked Teddy Long if the championship match was fair to Christian. Long admitted it was not. Not only that, Christian was not even close to being one hundred percent healthy having just been in a particularly brutal ladder match with Alberto Del Rio a mere five days earlier. Thus Christian was forced to participate in an unfair match against Randy Orton for the World Heavyweight Championship.
Randy Orton defeated Christian for the title that night, but a rematch was scheduled for Over The Limit. However, Randy retained the belt in the match.
Thus it was decided that a new number one contender was to be determined on the Friday Night Smackdown that took place after Over the Limit by General Manager Teddy Long. Christian should have automatically received another championship opportunity because even though Over the Limit was over a week after the ladder match at Extreme Rules there is no way he was one hundred percent, despite what he said. That was just his ego talking.
The winner of a match between Mark Henry, Sheamus, and Christian would be getting a World Heavyweight Championship match the following week. Randy was at ringside doing commentary during the contest. As the contest was drawing to its end it was apparent that Christian was going to win the match, however Randy Orton interfered attacking Sheamus costing Christian the match.
The following week Christian confronted Teddy Long about the interference and asked for another title match. This was a more than reasonable request considering the “unfair” match which he lost the World Heavyweight Championship in as well as not being in peak physical condition for the match at Over the Limit, as well as what happened the week before. Besides, in the past Teddy Long gave Batista seemingly a championship match whenever he wanted one. However, despite it being the fair and just thing to do Long did not give Christian a title match, even though he agreed that Christian was robbed, instead he made him the ref for the match between Randy Orton and Sheamus. This despite, Christian taking a poll of the audience to see who they wanted to face Randy Orton for the belt more him or Sheamus, even thoughthe fans wanted to see Christian get another rematch.
Randy Orton emerged victorious in the match against the celtic warrior, however after the match Christian hit Randy in the head with the World Heavyweight Championship. Not only that, Christian walked out with the World Heavyweight Championship.
The following week Christian explained his actions. He said that he screwed out of title five days after winning it, which he was. He explained that he was screwed out of number one contender spot two weeks earlier, which is also true. Christian continued saying that he turned back on the fans because he is confused why people who supported him over when he won the belt are now same people that are upset he attacked Orton with the belt. He is also confused as to why Teddy Long asks the fans opinions on matches because in other professions this isn’t the case and that the fans have no right to control his fate or who he defended the belt against, which is also true. Christian felts disrespected, especially by Orton and that if he was any kind of man he wouldn’t have accepted the match which in which he won the title knowing the Christian had been in a ladder match a mere five days prior to his first and only title defence.
You know what, he was right. Even right now he is being screwed out of the World Heavyweight Championship, but that is a story for another day.
