Asian film review: Tokyo Gore Police

Weakly Humans! Prepare for a splatter fest of splatter fests in Tokyo Gore Police. This flick is Yoshihiro Nishimura’s first try at making a full length movie, rather than just being the guy behind the gore effects.(yes, this is a review of something very graphically violent and fun.) He’s made short films before but in this instance he gets to stretch his blood soaked arms. (Just don’t drip any on the new couch)

In Tokyo Gore Police we are introduced to the Tokyo Police Force in the near future Japan. A recently privatized law enforcement has to deal with mad scientist known as Keyman. He turns his victims into engineers (creatures that sprout weapons if limbs are cut off) using a virus. The police have formed a special force known as Engineer hunters (who act like judge, jury and executioner) have been formed in order to handle Key Man and the engineers. Within the police force is a female officer by the name of Ruka. Who not only is very good at killing the engineers but is also trying to find out the years old mystery of who murdered her father. (I’m still looking for the people that murdered my cousin’s aunt’s grand uncle’s former roommate)

They're on the case.

The main points of the plot are the murder mystery, who exactly Key Man is, and how it ties into the privatization of the police, but it’s a very thinly written story(bulimia thin) that is meant to hold together all the violent gore and insane shit your about to see in this movie. There’s splatter, limbs and organs torn and thrown around all over the place. This almost seems like an exercise on how many different types of dismemberment can be squeezed into the movie. And of course Nishimura gets quite creative.  Such as a squirting acid bath from a mutant, a broken bottle used to stab and pull out a face, and a man pulling a muscle nerve from his freshly severed hand in order to fire a gun.

Then you got the mutilation and mutation of the engineer creatures. This allows for such delights such as a woman growing a crocodile mouth below her waist after her legs where cut off, and a mutant penis machinegun.(hung like a horse…that’s a pulling a canon)

In addition to the bloodbath you see, the visuals from the costumes aren’t that bad. The Engineer Hunters have a cool uniform that’s a hybrid of SWAT team uniform and samurai armor. And Ruka’s clothes can be seen as a cosplayer’s dream.

Tokyo Gore Police also isn’t afraid to be humorous either. There are several funny commercials sprinkled throughout the movie. There are advertisements selling fashionable blades for young girls to cut their wrists with, and a video game for family members to execute the killer of their children. All of which Noboru Iguchi was brought in to direct. (the director of the best movie ever, The Machine Girl)
Then there’s the perky announcer of the police bulletins. Pretty much a woman in a police themed stripper outfit, who during one montage starts to dance. This film not only sends blood flying everywhere, it also sends it rushing to your groin area.

Overall, it’s very light on story, but a great movie to watch at least once if cheesy and all out gore is of your tastes.
