Guillotinna and the art of Yasushi Nirasawa

So when I was down in the Little Tokyo area of Los Angeles, and I stumbled upon this toy in the Anime Jungle shop.

Which has taken me to go down the history of illustrator/sculptor/designer Yasushi Nirasawa. A man who has worked on designs for many games, anime, TV shows, movies, and manga. Most notable among this are his designs for Kamen Rider and Amon: Apocalypse of Devilman.
His style is that of dark and intricately detailed. Drawing inspiration from western artists such as HR Giger and Clive Barker and combining with his own flare. With many unique muscular creatures and voluptuous women. In particular with the previous mentioned Devilman. His designs for the anime special worked well with the style of originally creator Go Nagai.

Of course Nirasawa didn’t just work on art for others but released manga and art books of his own creations. And from these works he had many toys that adapted them. Which is where the toy company Fewture models come into this. For years they made toys based on several properties, and with Nirasawa’s properties they decided to make a push into the American market in the late 90s/early 2000s (which was experiencing a big boom). That’s where this toy I bought comes into play.

This figure is the character Guillotinna, from Nirasawa’s manga titled “Doesn’t”. A figure I saw many years ago in Wizard magazine. Here’s a video of me showing you it in detail.

Unfortunately for the world, Nirasawa passed away in 2016 at age 52. Aside form his commercial works, he worked on art on his off hours and ran exhibits featuring them. He was a man who always worked on his creativity, and was a greatly underappreciated talent. A lot of great things are sometimes beneath the surface and waiting to be discovered.
