Michael Fassbender trades his alien egg-chiller for a badge and a gun in this new mystery thriller coming in October. He’s Harry Hole, a detective searching for a serial killer whom appears to be obsessed with snowmen and by the killer’s standards, “shameless” women.
The trailer hooks you, mainly because the entire build-up is based on who actually plays the murderer in the movie. There are a lot of scenes shown in quick bursts in the trailer, but nothing major seems to be spoiled. We know that the cast will be worth watching, period, but if Tomas Alfredson who directed the original Let the Right One In, a classic and unique Swedish film about a young vampire, is the one behind the camera we won’t be disappointed. (He has a thing for snow, doesn’t he?) His use of wide-angled shots, even in small settings, are things of artistic beauty.
It also stars indie-darling Chloe Sevigny in an unnamed role. If Sevingy is in it, then you know some dark stuff is going down! And interestingly enough, The Snowman was originally going to be directed by Martin Scorsese. While Scorsese is obviously a living legend, it takes a special kind of dark eccentricity to make a film like this really stand out and that is most definitely in Alfredson’s wheelhouse.
Based on the novel written by Jo Nesbo, The Snowman is one of the last stories published in The Harry Hole series, so we can presumably expect to see more movie adaptations in the future, preferably starring Michael Fassbender as Harry. Depending on how well this one does at the box office that can either be a good or a bad thing.
