Am I the only one underwhelmed by the new official Thor trailer that headlined at SDCC this weekend? Then again, Disney/Marvel is having a difficult time coming up with new material capable of shocking and moving us. It seems its multi-layered movies are all building up to just one thing — Avengers: Infinity War (2018). Then, what will Marvel do with itself?
I have a hard time keeping up with the Thor storyline anyway, but aside from the forced hype invoked by the songs in the trailers (the first trailer featured Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song”), the film looks like a CGI-infested smash-fest. Take out the music and what do we have? Storyline mush.
Don’t get me wrong, there are a few redeeming qualities for the new movie. Doctor Strange makes an appearance (even though we saw nothing of the sort in the trailer), and of course, Cate Blanchett simultaneously strikes fear and love in our hearts as Hela whose motive we don’t know, but she has it in for Thor. Much like the previous Marvel films that released this year, this new Thor movie is supposed to lay more groundwork for Infinity War. The fire beast (possibly Surtur) at the end of the official trailer looks pretty badass though.
The director is credible for sure, but he’s a long way from his indie-town he’s so used to playing in. I have high hopes that Taika Waititi, known for co-directing What We Do in the Shadows and for directing Hunt for the Wilderpeople, will attempt something unique for this Thor film.
Despite the major cast list, I predict that the Thor: Ragnarok plot will ultimately fizzle out.
