Nothing is better than some giant monsters tearing stuff apart and wreaking havoc. The world needs more monster movies! Thankfully, kaiju monsters may ultimately steal the limelight from the comic-book franchises in the next couple of years. The superhero universe is endless, but there’s a lot more wiggle-room for plot, creativity and just flat-out fun in the Monsterverse. (Fewer fanboys worried over costume colors to piss off, anyway.) Not to mention, monsters are more fun!
May the war between DC and Marvel finally R.I.P.
Legendary Pictures recently announced Godzilla: King of the Monsters, aka Godzilla II, sequel to Kong: Skull Island to be released in March of 2019. Not much else has been shown or said about the upcoming monster movie, other than that it will be directed by Michael Dougherty (Krampus), so here’s hoping that its tone will be a little darker with the right blend of action and horror, similar to how Godzilla (2014) was.
Except, leave out the unnecessary love story. Please.
And, focus on what everyone came to see – the actual monster. Everyone will doubt Dougherty, but he has potential to create something really great.
It’s bound to include the action-porn that is expected with these monster mash-ups, but that monster fans don’t always get. Even though this year’s Kong had some script development issues, it was a recovery from Peter Jackson’s snooze-filled attempt in 2005. Kong (2017) still had plenty of beautiful action shots and a few new monsters to keep the fans entertained, for the most part. In the end credits it also teased the return of Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah in this next epic installment – which will set up Godzilla vs. King Kong in 2020.
NERDRAGE!!!
There’s a lot of skepticism that surrounds these monster movies: what is the story about? Does it make sense? Is Godzilla really 400 feet tall? Does it surpass the original? (I would hope that it would, given that the original was made in the 50’s with very limited graphics capabilities and it lacked actual acting.) People put way too much thought into these movies. They aren’t meant to win awards; they’re meant to entertain and distract us from the typical films we’re so used to seeing.
As long as the action freakin’ rules, who cares what the story does? Every one knows where Godzilla came from, so let’s see him tear some shit up! Without a scene or two of Godzilla ripping a creature’s head off, there’s no point.
A stellar cast has been announced for the new Godzilla movie coming up as well, which will include Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Very Farmiga (The Conjuring, Bates Motel), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones, Alien 3), and a few other big-names. As if fans didn’t already have good reasons to get pumped for this movie. As long as Godzilla II stays grounded and doesn’t try to accomplish too much at one time, it’ll be worth it.
