Netflix’s recent original movie, Okja is moving, visually stunning, but it’ll break your damn heart — and, it’s worth it.
It’s a futuristic, yet realistic, story about a young Korean girl that will go to any lengths to save her pet and best friend, Okja, a giant “superpig” that was mass-created 20 years before as a “product” that is promised to feed millions of people all over the world. The movie’s animal-rights theme is apparent and in some moments very dark, and Director Bong Joon Ho’s (Snowpiercer) use of satire and graphics is a thing of beauty.
The movie is loaded with a great cast as well, including Jake Gyllenhaal and Tilda Swinton, portraying so outlandish characters that you don’t know whether to laugh at them or fear them. Paul Dano just gets better and better.
And weirder.
Okja is quirky and vibrant, and Bong Joon-Ho’s style is so unique and so memorable. It will burn a hole in your brain. Basically, this movie will send your emotions on a thrill-ride that you won’t forget. Let’s just say my heart was in my stomach the entire time and I liked it. If you’re into unusual Netflix original movies, which (let’s face it, most of them are), you’ll enjoy this one.
