Network exclusives can be really tough for a show. Take for example the DirecTV-exclusive Kingdom, which has all the elements of a great show. Had this been on HBO or Netflix it would definitely be talked about quite a bit.
Following a retired mixed martial artist who runs a gym while training his sons to be fighter, Kingdom is a hidden gem on DirectTV. The MMA aspect may put some people off, but like another great TV show that didn’t get the attention it deserved, Friday Night Lights, it isn’t always about the sport. Just like the Sopranos or Sons of Anarchy, Kingdom deals with what these characters go through in everyday life both personally and professionally. Dealings with shady promoters, family drama, violence, drug addicts, pimps – it’s all there.
The show doesn’t pull any punches (haha) with the drama. Every character has an arc that keeps you sucked in and everyone doesn’t get that happy ending. This ain’t Rocky, baby, this is a different beast which creator Byron Balasco probably would’ve named it if he had his way. Imagine that, an MMA TV show called Beast. Sounds like a damn monster movie.
Kingdom stars Frank Grillo (perfect in the central role), Jonathan Tucker (scene stealer), Nick Jonas (yes, him), Kiele Sanchez and Matt Lauria, who all do exceptional work on the series. Right now season 3 is currently airing every Wednesday on DirecTV. If you have DirecTV, get on it, otherwise seasons 1 and 2 are available on DVD.
