For a lot of people DC has a spotty record when it comes to their films. Man of Steel, Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad haven’t received the glowing reviews Marvel has which I personally don’t mind. Marvel is doing their thing and the majority of the movie-going public love those movies and that’s great. I, by no means, like to take sides on the DC/Marvel rivalry. I did and still like the DC movies mentioned above. They’re different. They have their own style. They don’t have to be Marvel, although I’m sure DC would love their critical praise. Which brings me to Wonder Woman.
Wonder Woman opened up this week with a lot of buzz. From the very beginning Wonder Woman has taken a lot bumps on the way to the big screen. Failed attempts on tv that didn’t even get past the pilot stage, a movie written by Joss Whedon and also the casting of Gal Gadot was met with hostility.
June 2nd. 140 minutes. I came out of that movie with a smile on my face and wondering if I should wait till Blu Ray to watch it again or catch another showing. It’s that good. For the first 30-40 minutes, it lays out the story of the movie and is a bit of an origin story but once Wonder Woman steps out onto the battlefield, the rest of the movie was rock n roll.
As I mentioned before, I like the DC movies that have come out. Yes, they have their problems (I’m looking at you, Enchantress from Suicide Squad) but what movie doesn’t? Except for Steven Seagal’s Out For Justice. That’s a perfect movie to me. But these movies have their problems and Wonder Woman has a few as well but very small and one has to wonder (haha) if the new DC and even Marvel movies will follow suit on what Wonder Woman has done. I really can’t wait to see what DC and director Patty Jenkins have in store for the sequel. Let’s hope they don’t try to over-complicate things with a bigger is better story or “it’s time to save the world again.” Just make an enjoyable movie with a simple story. There are still some of us out there that enjoy that.
