In the bustle of our busy daily lives, we forget to enjoy the little things, the simple pleasures that arise out of nowhere. Some of us may struggle with making it to the local movie theatre as the summer blockbusters hit the screens every week, so we’re either confined to our homes or stuck at work for long hours.
Why do we torture ourselves?
I urge you to put down your planners and ignore your annoying friends’ texts about what you’re doing Friday night and, instead, bask in the convenient glory that is Netflix. It’s continued to prove that it’s a worthy streaming site, continuously releasing new and exciting content. In fact, I know a lot of people that once they hear “It’s on Netflix” their eyebrows raise with relieved surprise.
I’m not one to start several shows at once, but there are a few “Originals” to look forward to this month, so I can’t help myself. ‘Gilmore Girls’ and the other re-runs will have to wait. Shimmer Lake caught my attention from the start because it stars Rainn Wilson and John Michael Higgins and a few other note-worthies. It’s a dark mystery comedy about a local sheriff tailing three bank robbery suspects, and one happens to be his brother. Dark comedies are some of my favorite kinds of movies and Netflix seems to get these right more often than not, so I trust this to be a pretty fun watch. Keep an eye out for it to appear June 9.
The next was something I hadn’t really heard much about until recently. If you’re looking for some mindless, but semi-witty comedy you may want to look out for Oh, Hello on Broadway premiering June 13 with Nick Kroll and John Mulaney posing as two old dudes chatting about nonsense. It’s been critically acclaimed and should make for some good laughs. These two have hosted together and appeared on a few late night shows, and they already seem to have better on-stage chemistry than some power-couples, so I’m in.
A new original series called GLOW about a professional look into women’s wrestling premiers June 23 with Alison Brie in the lead role. It looks like it’s set in the mid 70’s, judging by the loud costumes and giant hair, which will probably add to the humor since the look of that time was so outrageous. June seems to be the month for comedies.
And, finally, Netflix saved the best for last: Okja, a Netflix original movie with subliminal messages about animal rights and capitalism follows a young girl who battles a large company from kidnapping her best friend – a giant creature that resembles a hippo named Okja. It has everything: drama, adventure, action, kooky graphics. And, you’re probably bound to have some tear-jerker moments in there as well. I’ve watched the trailer several times now; this kind of movie is right up my ally.
I know Netflix is known for its shows, but I really look forward to its original movies it puts out. They are few and far between and they are usually really well written. And weird. I like weird. If you’re like me and want to put off reality a little bit longer, take advantage of the upcoming new releases from Netflix this month because why not?
