*Spoilers Ahead*
New company cars, an office to call his own and a boss who actually seems to care, James McGill seems to have finally gotten the big time lawyer job he’s always wanted. All those things he wanted before are great but they pale in comparison to the thrill he gets just convincing someone to buy into whatever he’s trying to sell. That’s why when Mike calls him to ask if he’s still “morally flexible” Jimmy comes to solve the problem.
The lawyer life is good but Jimmy can’t help but crawl down from the high life and roll around in the muck a bit. After all, the muck is where all the real fun is. Mike, of course, needs help dealing with Daniel, he’s the quintessential dumb criminal who has been talking to the cops because he believes that will make him look like he has nothing to hide. The cops, of course, want to get him to reveal his drug dealing but that’s where Jimmy comes in.
Jimmy crafts a story about the “squat cobbler” (Hoboken squat cobbler, full moon moon pie, Boston creme splat and Simple Simon the ass man are all other names for it as well.) The scene is hilarious for the conviction with which Bob Odenkirk manages to say all these ridiculous terms. Odenkirk has always gotten the most out of Saul because the character plays to his strengths as a smarmy, quip machine and it’s great to see Jimmy go into full Goodman mode.
Odenkirk is hilarious, that’s never been in question but he also gets to show off more of the dramatic chops tonight, especially in the final scene. Jimmy and Kim sit on a bed and eat the leftover pies as Jimmy tells her the story and reveals that he had to record some videos of the act. Kim is horrified to discover this as it could cost Jimmy his job. The thought of it ending his career at Davis & Main never occurred to him and even when it’s brought up he doesn’t seem to think much will come of it. He’s more shocked that Kim was so hard on this. She can’t fathom why Jimmy would care so much to do this for someone he doesn’t even know and she tells him she “can’t hear about this sort of thing ever again.” To which Jimmy gives a quiet but assured “you won’t.”
Meanwhile, Chuck discovers Jimmy’s new job at Davis & Main and brings himself to step out of the house and back into the office to “bear witness.” Chuck’s mere presence almost sidetracks Jimmy but he soldiers on. Chuck came back to make sure his brother isn’t up to his old tricks and it sets up Jimmy for what’s sure to be a mighty fall. One his brother will be all too happy to watch unfold.
Jimmy can flip the switch between lawyer and conman all he wants but eventually someone is going to notice and that seems to ultimately be the conclusion we’re reaching this season.
Bits ‘n Pieces
- The scene between Mike and Nacho was fun, Jonathan Banks continues to impress and Nacho has turned into a wonderful addition to the stable of New Mexico drug dealers.
- Jimmy gets a cute “World’s 2nd Best Lawyer” mug from Kim but it doesn’t fit in his new car. The symbolism is strong!
- Also, I love that Jimmy has the new car sent to the nail salon just so he can show off before driving away.
- I guarantee “squat cobbler” is now officially a thing.
- “You think I’d be caught dead driving that thing? It looks like a school bus for 6 year old pimps.”
