*Spoilers Ahead*
After an interesting encounter at a diner, Ash and the group have a new member and make one more detour on their way to the cabin where everything began.
Before all hell broke loose last week, Ash met an old buddy of his named Lem who happened to be part of a militia. As expected, Lem ended up turning into a Deadite and he’s caused even more panic than usual at the militia camp. The militiamen foolishly believe that it was the government that caused Lem to turn and a good number of them end up paying the price for not listening to Ash and crew.
The group eventually gets separated when they try to leave, Ash and Fisher get caught and thrown into a bunker, one that happens to currently contain Lem. Meanwhile, Pablo and Kelly hideout from the men searching for them.
Pablo and Kelly have a nice sideplot that mainly involves Pablo’s search for a weapon of his own after Kelly’s insistence on getting a flamethrower. It does lead to one of the funniest scenes in the series when the Deadite that Pablo and Kelly killed turns out to not be finished and tries to grab Pablo as Kelly learns just how hard it is to fire a machine gun. The sight of Pablo dodging bullets and slipping around in the blood is one of the many joys in this episode.
Meanwhile, in the bunker, Ash and Fisher deal with Lem. I can’t stress how much I appreciate the show constantly finding ways to switch up the types of horror it uses in an episode. Sometime you get pure blood fests like last week or the psychological horror of Eligos. This week, Lem provides a more claustrophobic type of horror as he stalks Ash and Fisher through the bunker, pouring gasoline all over himself and threatening to set the whole place ablaze.
Speaking of Fisher, while her dynamic with Ash brings out the best in her she is still hugely undeveloped and it leads to the oddest parts of the episode. Nobody really addresses Fisher being new to the group and she seems to treat them all as if she’s known them for awhile. It makes it feel as though there’s a missing episode between this one and last week. This comes out the most towards the end when Ash puts his usual moves on her but instead of being turned down it seems as though he might actually get a new chick. Of course, Pablo and Kelly interrupt but such a sudden dynamic shift, considering Fisher was sticking a gun in Ash’s face just last week, makes it all feel off.
With Lem dealt with and the miltiamen coming to an understanding with Ash the group, now loaded with all the weapons they could ever need. Prepare to head off to the cabin but Ash is still having second thoughts. Everyone he’s ever cared for has gotten killed at that place and he can’t bring himself to do it again.
Ash disappears and heads out on his own for the cabin. I’m excited to see Ash removed from the group and vice versa and with only a few episodes left, all roads lead to the cabin, whether Ash likes it or not.
Bits ‘n Pieces
- As expected, Ruby is alive and well and back on the hunt for Ash. Also, she’s been hiding a badass knife in her car’s glove box.
- Also, we find out what happened to Ash’s hand, turns out it’s heading back to the cabin as well. Sounds like we might have a deadly reunion between the two.
- “I wish I had my rusty chain, yo”
- “I’m gonna get you pregnant later.” “Won’t your sister get jealous?”
