VAL KILMER IS VERY EXCITED ABOUT TOP GUN 2, POSSIBLE CHEQUE FROM TOP GUN 2

A long awaited sequel to classic volleyball movie Top Gun (that’s what that movie was about right?) has been in the works at Paramount for several years now. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Tom Cruise have been working on a sequel since at least 2012, but with Variety reporting that Val Kilmer excitedly took to Facebook to announce that’s he’s been offered the opportunity to reprise his role as Iceman in the sequel the project might be further along than we thought…or not, as it seems Kilmer was just jumping the (top) gun in his eagerness to be in a film that people might actually watch for the first time this decade.

In a totally easy to read Facebook post, Kilmer said that he was offered Top Gun 2, said yes without reading a script, and said something or other about Gene Hackman and Francis Ford Coppola. He later clarified that Hackman and Coppola were not involved in the project and were just examples of working opportunities you don’t say no to. You’d think it would be obvious that Gene Hackman wouldn’t be coming out of retirement for Top Gun 2, but Kilmer’s Facebook is just that incomprehensible. He also clarified that any film was still “a long way off” and that being offered a role is very different from being given a role. You shouldn’t get everybody’s hopes up like that Kilmer, because something something danger zone.

The improbable rise of The Fast and Furious from dumb ‘so 2001’ time capsule to beloved megabucks franchise has been a pleasant surprise to Universal, and they are now looking to keep that gravy train (or suped-up gravy muscle car) going the way big studios are wont to do: by “expanding the universe” and developing standalone features for the various members of Vin Diesel’s ‘family’. Like the guy who’s really good at cars. Or the other guy who’s really good at cars. Or the girl who’s really good at-no seriously Dwayne Johnson’s character Luke ‘Flex My Cast Off’ Hobbs is the frontrunner for obvious reasons.

Vinny D himself has been the one to talk about plans about Universal’s plans for various prequels and spinoffs from the Fast and Furious franchise, all while Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray works on directing Furious 8. It should be noted that every studio these days talks about turning any property they have into an expanded universe but that doesn’t necessarily mean it will happen-ask Universal how the movies spinning off from Dracula Untold has worked out-and Vin Diesel is possibly second only to Guillhermo Del Toro from being unable to resist talking about plans long before they ever work out, and sometimes without them ever working out at all. They should both meet up with Val Kilmer and pitch a movie where Maverick and Iceman pilot a Jaeger that the Fast and Furious team try to steal, then everyone teams up to talk on a giant monster and why is this not a thing I’m sorry I’m just going to be writing this script for the rest of the day, no more news, see you next time.
