Super groups come and go. Most promise more than they actually deliver (Them Crooked Vultures anyone?) or they tend to fizzle out before they even get started due to major ego conflicts. Luckily for us Killer Be Killed had not only lived up to the hype but far far exceeded it
Formed in 2011 when Max Cavalera (Ex Sepultura, Soulfly) and Greg Puciato (The Dillinger Escape Plan) go together a started working on material which they said was similar to Cavalera’s former side project Nail Bomb. Not long after that they added Troy Sanders (Mastodon) on bass and Dave Elitch (Ex The Mars Volta) on drums and signed to Nuclear Blast records.
With Cavalera and Puciato both on guitar and along with Sanders all three of them sharing vocal duties on all songs and even on the same song they really achieve a sound that is unmatched by anything I’ve heard to date
Imagine the intricacies of The Dillinger Escape Plan, the progressive heaviness of Mastodon and brutal thrash of early Sepultura all combined together on each and every one of the 11 tracks on this album. Its really amazing to hear Troy Sanders singing on a track doing his thing grooving along and then it ramps up hits the chorus and Max Cavalera comes on with his trade mark vocals barking out the chorus. Its really a thing of beauty.
To pick a stand out track is like having to pick a favourite child. They are all fantastic. From the opening track “Wings of Feather And Wax” to the finale “Forbidden Fire” there is not a weak track here. Across the album they manage to cover the styles of all the members other bands and touching upon many genres such as thrash, some groove, a little hardcore punk and some Sabbath-esque doom sounding parts.
Hopefully the band tours the world soon but Soulfly only just having a new album out and Mastodons new album coming out soon there may be a slight delay before any of us great to experience this live
If you are a fan of any of the band members other bands or even if you are not and just a fan of good metal then you need to get this album and listen to it from start to finish at least once. With so many metal bands releasing uninspired and generic sound albums Killer Be Killed is like a breath of fresh air.
