I know I’m running late on this, but in early August Daniel Bryan faced off against John Cena in the main event of “Monday Night RAW”. Now, I’m probably wrong, but as far as I know, that was the first “WWE Velocity” rematch to main even RAW. That’s a flimsy reason to write about it, but I’ve had worse. I’ve been in a wrestling kind of mood people, so it’s time to talk about it. It brings me back to 2002. WCW and ECW had folded. That left a big gap in my Saturday night wrestling viewing schedule. So when it was announced that Velocity was going to debut and a ton of cruiserweights were going to be on it I was all like:
Then in early 2003 I kind of stopped watching a lot of wrestling because for the first time in my life I had stuff to do and was a little burned out. And even though it was on Monday, the HHH power hour to start the show always had me like:
Then in late 2004 my friend Eric and I were settling into not hanging out with girls on Saturday nights and we went channel surfing. First we found an upstart TNA. Now this was the glory days before all the politics now. Back when young guys ruled the scene and TNA was worth watching. God did I get excited watching DDP fight the Road Dogg. Then later that night (or earlier, I’m not really sure) we found Velocity. I’d had forgotten all about this. I remember we watched Paul London take on Akio. We were all:
Needless to say, I made that my Saturday night ritual. We were super cool kids and on Saturdays we would watch those two shows and stay up really late to watch AAA on Gala vision. Good times. I’ve had girlfriends since, and at the risk of my current one punching me, I miss the wrestling. Who am I kidding; she’s not going to read. If she does and tries to bring it up I’ll be all:
For those unfamiliar, Velocity was the equivalent of HEAT for “Friday Night Smackdown” after the roster split. For those who don’t understand what I just said, I’ll try to explain it better. All the people not important enough to be on UPN were on this show. It was an hour long and it was green. That fact that DX was too important to take it over really is a shame. Luckily we got Scotty 2 Hotty.
Though my memories are fond, I don’t have much to say about this Saturday night special. Nothing important happened. Unlike it’s Sunday night counterpart that I reviewed earlier this year, it was always the 4th or 5th most important show. It was used to showcase guys like Paul London, Shannon Moore, and a young John Cena.
That’s right. Old banana pants wrestled on this show before becoming the biggest thing in wrestling since Virgil. Maybe that’s what Cena means when he says no one sees him.
Like I was saying, when typing Velocity into Google images, the only thing that comes up on the first page is the logo and Cena fighting Bryan. So if that is the bench mark for the show, ouch. I know William Regal and Chris Benoit had a hell of a match on there, but good luck getting WWE to release that any time soon. If only they’d release the “Best of Velocity.” I would buy 5 copies alone just to watch A-Train fight Bob-core Holly one more time. That match was as hard hitting as Kris Lewie.
