This past December, I dedicated the whole month to classic television shows. I started off that Month Talking about the Andy Griffith Show. There is a reason I did that. It is by far one of my favorite shows of all time, and based on the 60 year run it’s on, by far one of the best shows ever. This week the man behind the show Andy Griffith passed away at the age of 86. May of this year George Lindsey (Goober) died at the age of 83. So I thought it would be a good time to look back again at this show. I’ll throw in some new thoughts then repost my review from December.
I rarely get sentimental, about anything really, especially a piece of entertainment. Like two generations before me though, this show was a big part of growing up. It’s been on since I was born. The show has been on since my parents were born. My grandparents are the ones that have been watching it for 60 years and passed it on to all of us. It’s kind of like “Seinfeld” is now, in the sense that you can turn on a television at any time of the day and probably find it on. It’s that popular. I of course associate it with lazy afternoons as a child watching it with my grandma while she destroyed me at Rummy 500.
Along with all the memories it brings back from my childhood, even last weekend my Dad and I wasted a whole Saturday afternoon watching it. It just doesn’t get old. I can see Barney lock himself in a cell or Otis do something stupid over and over and laugh every time. When Andy teaches Ernest T. Bass how to read, it kills me and my Dad. We get excited when that episode comes on just for that moment. “The Andy Griffith Show” is the quality entertainment. Andy himself lived a long successful life, so this is more remembrance than mourning, but I felt I should honor someone that helped entertain the world for 60 years.
Now, here is the link to my review from December. Now I’m going to spend my Saturday watching the gang from Mayberry in the marathon that better be on TV Land. I’ve never watched “Matlock”, but maybe I’ll give that a go too.
