Tekken: Blood Vengeance

Today we talk of the iron fist. We talk about the movie Tekken: Blood Vengeance. Unlike its predecessor adaptations, such as the live action 2010 Tekken movie and the 1999 ova anime, this one remotely resembles the game. In fact I’m gonna make a few references to those two failures since it gives a better reason to appreciate Blood Vengeance.

Tekken Blood Vengeance centers around Shin Kamiya and his connections to the Mishima family. Ling Xiaoyu and  Alisa Bosconovitch  are on opposite sides and trying to find out as much info as they can about Shin and his mysterious past.

This thing also plays MP3s.

Unlike the other two obominations to try to bring Tekken to life, Blood Vengeance goes the cgi route to get a closer resemblance to the game series. The quality looks like game cut scenes but a little bit more refined.  With some impressive visuals to add to the scenery.

Anna's chest counts as a visual,right?

But of course we get pretty good fights. Fists and legs fly over the place.  There is some gun fire and explosions, but this being Tekken, the true impressive features are the fighting moves. We also get some of the characters signature moves from the games.

To the enjoyment of Ling Xiaoyu fans, she is the main character of this flick (at least the one that gets the most screen time).  For an action packed story about rival groups fighting for power, we sure see a lot of moe and shoujo elements.  Which kind of fits in the setting of an international high school (hey, it kicks “The Nation of Tekken” in the ass anytime!). The relationship between Xiaoyu and Alisa sometimes seem out of a completely different film.

Each one learning the meaning of friendship and what is to be human. Although in this version, Ling Xiaoyu slightly tones down her cuteness and leaves up to Bosconovitch to handle that part .It’s pretty much how the first portion of the movie is like, and lingers a little bit on toward the end. This will either excite or disappoint loyal Tekken fans. But at least they are exactly the same characters from the game!

Ling Xiaoyu doesn't care for your opinion either way.

Again comparing the different versions that came before, this Tekken flick does a better job of using characters in minor roles. Such as the sumo wrestler Ganryu as the gym teacher (as opposed to just standing there for a brief second), or Lee Chaolan as the English teacher who mixes random English words with his charismatic speaking.

"Excellent."

There are so many funny moments with these minor roles, including the mokujin exhibit. This sure beats out a brief screen shot showing law and others for a few seconds. I mean seriously, you have so many characters to work with and you don’t use them. Shame on you OVA Tekken!

Here's some more cool pics to make up for it.

So that is Tekken Blood Vengeance. A pretty solid action cgi action film that does justice to the fighting and story of Tekken. Whether it fits how you view Tekken is up to you, but at least it does a better job. Rather than giving us wasted character uses, stupid story altering, implied incest, and tight pants with butt cleavage (ok, the butt cleavage was hot….but wasted on such a piece of crap!).
